Prime minister tells shoppers to wear face coverings to protect others.

Boris Johnson has given his most explicit instruction to date on face coverings in public places, such as shops.

Speaking to Sky News this morning, the prime minister said people should wear face coverings in shops. He said both the wearer and others would be more protected if more people were to wear a face covering.

Current government guidance recommends face coverings to be worn where social distancing cannot be maintained. Their use is mandatory on public transport in England.

The prime minister said more will be announced on face coverings “in the next few days”.
