Johnson's Telegraph article sympathised with Iranian ambitions and said America should help the country.
Boris Johnson once argued America should “assist” Iran in its efforts to develop nuclear weapons, in an unearthed article from 2006.
The then MP for Henley said he thought it was “inevitable” that Iran would be successful in acquiring nuclear weapons and the west should “admit that it’s checkmate”.
Johnson sympathised with Iranian aspirations for a nuclear arsenal, saying if he were Iranian he would consider it the “only sure-fire means” of protecting the country.
The government continues to support the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPoA), adopted in 2015, which places restrictions on Iran’s nuclear programme in exchange for sanctions relief.
