Boris Johnson sent his dad Stanley Johnson to debate on his behalf in the Channel 4 climate debate this evening. Michael Gove was also sent to the studios on the prime minister’s behalf.
The Tory leader refused to take part in Channel 4’s climate debate for party leaders on Thursday evening. Nigel Farage also refused to attend.
Jeremy Corbyn, Jo Swinson, Nicola Sturgeon, Sian Berry and Adam Price represented their parties in the hour-long debate. The channel placed melting ice sculptures in the place of the two leaders who refused.
Channel 4 News editor Ben de Pear said the prime minister “sent his two wing men” to debate in his place. Neither men were allowed because they are not party leaders, de Pear said.
In a last ditch attempt @BorisJohnson has sent his two wing men best friend @michaelgove and dad Stanley Johnson to argue their way into a programme intended only for leaders. they were lovely and charming but neither are the leader #climatedebate pic.twitter.com/3TdGT3Q4ZJ
