Fiona Onasanya first MP to be recalled under petition system

A by-election will take place in Peterborough after a recall petition against the sitting MP Fiona Onasanya reached the required number of signatures.

The recall petition was triggered after Onasanya was rejected an appeal against her conviction for perverting the course of justice. Such a petition requires 10% of electors in a constituency to sign it for it to result in a by-election.

The by-election will be held after the EU elections on 23rd May and could see Nigel Farage’s Brexit Party take votes from both main parties. Onasanya won the seat in 2017 as a Labour candidate from Conservative Stewart Jackson. Her majority was just 607 votes.
