The number of lab-confirmed coronavirus cases in England in a single day has reached the highest number in six weeks.
The latest number of positive cases for tests carried out on 29th July currently stands at 929. The last time single-day cases were this high was on 18th June, with 944 positive tests.
The new record comes amid increasing concerns of a resurgence in Covid-19 transmissions. The seven-daily rolling average of new cases in England has been rising for several weeks.
The increase in cases has prompted the government to consider new measures for controlling the virus while unlocking economic activity. It was reported over the weekend that over-50s could be advised to shield based on individual assessments of their medical history and age.
No10 has refused to rule out a national roll-out of restrictions on social contact currently in force in northern England.
