Prime Minister will remain in office until her successor for the Conservative leadership is chosen

Theresa May has officially announced she will resign as leader of the Conservative Party on 7 June, triggering a leadership contest.

She will stay on as Prime Minister until her successor is chosen. Candidates have started to announce, including foreign secretary Jeremy Hunt. The contest will officially begin on 10 June and is planned to end in July.

One of May’s final duties will be to welcome President Trump for his State Visit on 3 June.
