Taliban set to take over Afghan government ‘within hours’.
Parliament will be recalled on Wednesday 18th August at the government’s request to discuss the situation in Afghanistan.
The development came within hours of the Taliban entering the Afghan capital Kabul following a rapid take-over of the country.
Reports on Sunday morning suggested that Afghan president Ashraf Ghani was set to resign in a ‘peaceful transfer of power’ to a ‘transitional government’. The president reportedly left the country later that day.
NATO countries scrambled to evacuate embassy personnel and officials over the weekend. Helicopters were seen making regular landings and liftoffs from the US embassy complex.
